High Times senior editor Bobby Black conducted an interview with heavy metal icon Philip Anselmo (DOWN, PANTERA, ARSON ANTHEM, SUPERJOINT RITUAL) before DOWN‘s April 28, 2011 concert at the Best Buy Theater in New York City. The chat can now be viewed in four parts below. A few excerpts follow (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).
High Times: Looking back at [your time with PANTERA], does it feel like it happened yesterday or does it feel like it was a lifetime ago?
Anselmo: “Parts of it feel like it happened yesterday, or… Oh my God… I’ve said it before and I don’t wanna regurgitate it, but I think about PANTERA every day of my life in one way, shape or form. I always pondered the thought ‘what if’ — you know? — [late PANTERA guitarist] Dimebag [Darrell Abbott] was still alive, I think there would have been an end to any rift that there [was]. John Dunphy of the Morristown Patch recently conducted an interview with new DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Mangini. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
On dedicating himself fully to one thing — the band — after marrying in 2005 and spending several years as associate professor of percussion at the Berklee College of Music:
“I wanted to make a family,” he said, marrying in 2005, the same year he was offered a full-time position with Berklee, where he had been since 2000. “I wasn’t able to for one reason or another get that done. Once I moved back home I could be in the area for a long time, I could network. Meet, get married, have children.” Continue Reading
Legendary guitarist Slash (GUNS N’ ROSES, VELVET REVOLVER) will enter Barefoot Recording in Hollywood, California later this month with producer Eric Valentine (QUEENS OF STONE AGE, THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS) to begin recording his second solo album for an early 2012 release. Joining Slash in the studio will be the members of his touring band: vocalist Myles Kennedy (ALTER BRIDGE), rhythm guitarist Bobby Schneck, bassist Todd Kerns (SIN CITY SINNERS, formerly of AGE OF ELECTRIC), and drummer Brent Fitz (formerly of THEORY OF A DEADMAN).
Commented Kerns in a post on his official blog: “Back when I was originally asked to support [Slash] on his first solo tour, I wasn’t sure if it would be a month or maybe fly-outs on weekends or what. Now here we are a year and a half later and we’re getting ready to record a new CD as a band. [I] did not see that coming. Continue Reading
Finnish cello rockers APOCALYPTICA have played more than 1,000 live shows in over 50 countries and experienced countless stages, backstage areas and extraordinary encounters in all parts of the world. Since 1993, APOCALYPTICA not only overcame borders musically, but also took its tour program around the globe relentlessly. Ville-Akseli Juurikkala, photographer and close friend, has been accompanying the band for some years now, recently capturing the most beautiful, exciting and unexpected moments of the “7th Symphony Tour“. These pictures are now released as a premium photo book. The book will be distributed in cooperation with the British company Pledge Music. Founded in 2008 by musician Benji Rogers, Pledge Music offers artists a structure to make projects possible solely by the direct support of their fans, and at the same time helps raising money for charities. Via so-called “pledges,” the fans “promise” to contribute to a certain project in exchange for an issue of the product as soon as it is finished. This way, the “pledgers” virtually become A&R managers, record companies, or — in this case — publishers. Continue Reading
METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield was interviewed by the Argentinian radio station Rock & Pop 95.9 FM before the band’s performance at the Rock In Rio festival in on September 25, 2011 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
Hetfield‘s answers below.
On how METALLICA’s collaboration with former VELVET UNDERGROUND frontman Lou Reed came about:
Hetfield: “Well, at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, we jammed with him on the 25th-year anniversary, and after the playing, he felt so good, he felt so alive that backstage there were some friends of his coming up to us saying, ‘What did you do to him? We’ve never seen him smile so much.’ And then he just yelled down the hallway as we were leaving, ‘We should do a record together.’ And we thought, ‘Yeah, right. Is he talking to us?’ [Laughs] But he was serious. He had told us that we’re the band he always wanted to have. And I agreed — METALLICA is the band I always wanted to have as well. [Laughs]” Continue Reading

DOWN guitarist Kirk Windstein has confirmed via Twitter that the band is rehearsing in preparation for its next studio session, which is scheduled for later this month.
Windstein in June told Radio Metal that DOWN is planning to release four separate EPs over the course of the next couple of years. “We’re going to do four EPs, and they’ll all be different,” he said. “We have many elements to our sound, so each one will have its own characteristics. Like, for example, this one we’re writing right now and are about to start recording will be really hard, with heavy DOWN stuff. Then we’ll have a mellow one, then a doom one — you know, slower and doomy stuff. A little bit of everything.” Continue Reading
Richard Bienstock of Guitar World conducted an interview with ANTHRAX for the magazine’s November 2011 issue, which features the “Big Four” of 1980s thrash metal (METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX) on the cover. An excerpt from the chat follows below.
Guitar World: Fans of the band still seem to be a little confused as to what happened with previous singer Dan Nelson. Did he quit? Was he fired? Was he truly sick, as was stated in the press release?
Scott Ian (guitar): He quit the band, dude. I will stick by the statement I made back in the summer of 2009. He quit. He e-mailed management and he quit the band. Continue Reading
A new one-minute trailer for “Now You’re Here, There’s No Way Back: The Quiet Riot Story” can be seen at Vimeo.com. The documentary about the legendary California hard rockers is being helmed by actress and filmmaker Regina Russell, who also happens to be engaged to QUIET RIOT drummer Frankie Banali.
“I absolutely love their music,” she told AOL‘s Noisecreep, “along with they did. They unleashed the power of the hair bands of the ’80s when record companies thought hard rock bands had become dinosaurs. So I want to tell their story. These were real people in a real band that changed the face of music and so I thought it was time to make this happen.” Continue Reading
