A new study claims to have found that young people at risk of depression are more likely to listen habitually and repetitively to heavy metal music.
A senior lecturer in Music Therapy at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Dr Katrina McFerran – which consistently ranks among the best universities in Australia and the world, especially in the biological and health sciences — is immersed in a new study that aims to find out why some young people use heavy metal music in a negative way.

It sounds like the genesis for the songs on the album was you, Frank [Bello], and Charlie [Benante], working out ideas in a rehearsal room. I was wondering — especially given how hooky the vocal melodies are throughout — at that early stage, do you mess around with a guide vocal? Or are those melodies left in the singer’s hands?
Ian: Not really at that early stage, no. It’s more just getting the arrangements together. And then once basic arrangements of the music are done, we start focusing on melody lines and I start focusing on lyrics. Kevin and Ian of the “Metal Shop” radio show, which airs on the Seattle station KISW 99.9 FM, conducted an interview with vocalist/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt of Swedish progressive metallers OPETH on October 15 at the Showbox SODO in Seattle.
“The Chosen Few“, the newly released compilation album from British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST, sold 1,300 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The collection, which came out on October 11 via Legacy/Sony, contains songs that were selected by some of the biggest names of the hard rock/heavy metal world, including KISS‘ Gene Simmons, Ozzy Osbourne, Slash, METALLICA‘s James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, Alice Cooper and SLIPKNOT‘s Corey Taylor.
